Biological tools:
In order to study ATM’s role in the cell, model organisms, small molecules, and Gene Ontology were used. In model organisms the ATM gene was perturbed and the resulting phenotype was examined. This is important in order to figure out how ATM is important in the wellbeing of the organism and can lead to further insight into how ATM works in humans. Small molecules are useful in that they can be used to disrupt the ATM protein within the cell. Gene ontology is important because it allows one to see what processes ATM is involved in and can lead to new research that studies how ATM is involved in a biological process of interest. The following pages give more information regarding the biological tools used to study ATM.
Microarrays are another useful tool when studying the genetic components of disease but this was not studied extensively for this project.
